Words are counted by spaces. Chinese, Japanese and Thai are written without spaces, so those counts come out far too low.
How it works
Words. The text is split wherever there is a space, tab or new line. A piece counts as a word if it holds at least one letter or number. So well-known, 1,000 and 3.14 are one word each, and a lone dash, ampersand or emoji is not a word.
Characters. Every character counts, spaces and new lines included. An emoji counts as one character, though some are built from several.
Time. Words divided by words per minute, rounded to the nearest second, and never less than 1 second when there is at least one word. Under 10 minutes you see minutes and seconds, then whole minutes, then hours and minutes. The starting speeds are typical figures for silent and spoken reading; change them to match yours.
Limits. Words are counted by spaces. Chinese, Japanese and Thai are written without spaces, so those counts come out far too low. Right-to-left text such as Arabic and Hebrew is counted the same way and is not checked. These are estimates for planning, not a measure of any reader.
